Astral projection is the experience of astral body, also called soul body or dream body partially and temporarily separating from the physical body. Astral projection is something called astral travel, soul travel, or out of body experience (OOBE).

As long as the physical body lives, during astral travel, the astral body is at all times attached to the physical body through a silver chord which may or may not be visible to you, while you are having an out of body experience.

We are all having out of body experiences while our physical body is deeply asleep, but may not be conscious of those experiences. When your consciousness is returning to the physical body, the awareness and memory of non-physical experiences you had while your body was asleep may diminish even to the point that you have no memory of your experiences while your body was sleeping.

Some people find it easy to leave the body at will, and are wondering what's the fuss about the astral projection, while others have more challenging time, and may need more patience and practice to experience astral travel at will.

The difference between lucid dreaming and astral projection is that while you are having lucid dreams, you are lucid in a dream, however when experiencing astral projection you are no longer dreaming. If you experience lucid dreaming and desire to experience astral projection, first you need to "dissolve" the dream, or if you will awake from the dream, without returning your consciousness to the physical body.

During astral projection you may explore different dimensions and environments - some may be familiar, some unfamiliar, some belonging to a realm that is very much like the physical realm, and others very different, some may be populated or unpopulated, of all kinds. Your thoughts and emotions, your deep desires are likely to influence your experiences, as much as your conscious choices. You are free to alter your experience through intention.

A variation of astral projection experience, which occasionally also goes by the name of soul travel, and sometimes as etheric travel, is when you are separating from your body to visit a location or a person who is here on earth. And yet another off-shoot is bi-location. During these kinds of experiences, you would be visible to others to varying degrees.

Since everything is made out of energy and consciousness and including your astral body, soul body, etheric body, physical body and whatever name you desire to give to any aspect of yourself, as well as different dimensions you can experience while astral projecting - and since energy follows though, to what degree you get projected, or to what extent you manifest yourself in these different environments, would depend also on your state of consciousness. You are not limited either by space or by time - and you may very well find yourself exploring environments in different space / time continuum
