Staving Off Death by Chanting
Mahamrityunjaya (Life-Giving)
Mantra
A prominent Vedic astrologer in India, K.N. Rao, was glancing over a friend's horoscope when he noticed that the man was about to enter an extremely dangerous planetary cycle. Death was imminent. The astrologer didn't mention what he'd seen, but strongly advised his friend to chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra faithfully every day. His friend wasn't an idiot. Knowing that an expert Vedic astrologer wouldn't recommend this particular mantra unless there was a darn good reason, he immediately began to chant it.
The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is the great Vedic mantra for staving off death. Translated into English, it goes something like, "I honor the All-Seeing One, Whose grace is all-pervading like the fragrance of a flower. May He release me from the grip of death as easily as a ripe fruit is released from a vine!"
A few weeks later this gentleman was conducting an inspection in a warehouse. A girder suddenly gave way and several tons of cement bags came tumbling down over his head!
Workers rushed to drag the heavy bags off him. But they were certain he'd been killed. If he hadn't died instantly from a blow to the head or been crushed, he should have suffocated in the time it took them to free him. It turned out that although Rao's friend had been knocked unconscious, once he came to he was no worse for the wear. He had a hairline fracture to a leg bone but was otherwise OK.
